Artist Statement
The ceramics pieces I tried to create were pieces that looked decent and used new skills that I was taught in ceramics class. A good or successful piece would be one that used all or most of the skills that I had learned up until that point. My art didn’t express much because it was pretty simple. It is unique because even though everyone would use the same techniques to make their pieces, I would try to add something different to it that we did not go over, or that I saw while I was researching for ideas. To make my work I would first look up different pieces that used whatever technique we were learning in class, and then I would sketch ideas of my own. I would then choose an idea and start creating it, but my art may not reflect whatever idea I chose because sometimes I would change it as I created it. Throughout the art making process I hoped to learn how to make my pieces look better and incorporate everything I had learned up to that point.
The things that inspire me and specifically my artwork are photos of that type of artwork, and photos where whatever type of artwork I am creating can be seen in history. Almost all of my work this year has been influenced by photos of other art that I found online.
My decision making process when planning to make a project is mostly determined by what type of project we are making, and what skills need to be demonstrated by that project. After that I think of possible things that would demonstrate whatever technique we are learning and then I look up other ideas online. After I have done that I finalize what theme I am going to use. Sometimes I will immediately start using clay to see if there's anything that I create to better guide my search for idea. Different techniques that I used to create my projects are pinching, slip and scoring, rolling and connecting slabs, coils, sgraffito, and glazing. I would also use tools to draw designs on my pieces to make them look more unique.
Things that I struggled with while making my art are: getting the piece to look smooth or uniform, especially when I would connect multiple pieces of clay together like when I made a coil pot or slab box. Another thing I struggled with is keeping the clay wet enough to work with, but not too wet to where it is impossible to work with. As the year progressed I think my work has improved because I found ways so that my work would look neat and uniform, as well as manage the moisture in the clay by wrapping it and praying it. I think my work was pretty minimalistic because it never had any intricate designs on it, and the colors used were usually simple. I think that simple pieces are better for me though because if I tried to make them too complicated, I think they would turn out looking worse than a simple one.
